Your ranged weapon runs on recharging ammo and can be used while standing still or coupled with a slick dodge move where you can fire while sidestepping at the same time. This adds a great level of strategy that constantly sees you switching weapons mid-fight.

Once it’s full, however, if you unleash one of your skills using that weapon, you will perform a significantly deadlier version of that skill and that weapon’s Zing will reset to zero. The higher the Zing, the more immediate damage the weapon deals. Your melee weapons have a ‘Zing’ gauge that fills up as you attack. Combat takes the form of a surprisingly complex real-time battle system that’s as visceral as it’s tactical, letting you dish out combos with light and heavy attacks while also managing your batch of Higgledies and two other characters, all of whom have three melee weapons and one ranged weapon on hand at all times. Ni No Kuni II works within the tropes of a traditional JRPG where you explore an overworld map, occasionally stopping to get in fights with monsters that respawn from time to time.

As you venture out on your journey, Evan gains a characteristically eclectic group of friends including an old lady who calls herself Auntie Martha, a group of sky pirates, and some adorable magical creatures known as Higgledies. Meeting up with the now in danger prince Evan, Roland helps him escape his attackers and get to safety where Evan then decides to take back his crown and bring peace to the world. Ni No Kuni II starts off with an American President named Roland getting nuked and being transported to the magical realm of Ni No Kuni (which translates from Japanese as either “Country of Two” or Second Country”) where a coup is underway in the kingdom of Ding Dong Dell.

But to me, the pinnacle of this concept was reached in 2013 when Studio Ghibli themselves partnered with Level-5 Games to create Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, a gorgeous JRPG that featured all the fun of a Pokemon game but with the distinct style and world-building that you can only get from a Ghibli production.įive years later, we got Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom which, while not strictly a Ghibli production, was still developed by several former Ghibli animators to make sure it retained the charm and aesthetic of the original, while completely blowing up the scope of the adventure and addressing, almost systematically, every single criticism or concern that was leveled at the first game.

With time, games have gotten progressively better at letting us explore our favourite movie worlds with titles like Mad Max, Shadow of Mordor, and even some of the later Harry Potter games painstakingly recreating the settings of our favourite films. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to get to walk through the magical landscape of Nausicaa? How great would it be to hang out with Princess Mononoke and go on adventures with her? This longing had become stronger than ever when I discovered, surprisingly late in 2008, the magic of Studio Ghibli. The beauty of games, for me, had always been the way they let you explore and absorb worlds at your own pace, and the ability to do that with my favourite films was something I’ve always wanted to have. A fantastic collector OST to have in your collection if you loved the first Ni No Kuni game and while you may be enjoying the fabulous Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom on Playstation 4 (with a new Joe Hisaishi collaboration for the soundtrack). As someone who grew up harbouring an equally deep love for both cinema and videogames, I always imagined what it would be like to play a videogame set in the worlds of my favourite films.
